My World in Cricket

Stuart Broad's newest book was released last month. A few lucky Broadettes got to meet the superstar himself at one of his book signings! They've read his book, have you? If not, grab it here. Reviews from the Broadettes coming soon!

Stuart Broad was born to be a cricketer. His skills with the ball and bat have made him world famous, but what is it like to be the star of the England cricket team? From the techniques and tactics he has learned, to preparing himself for action, both mentally and physically, Broad reveals the inside secrets of top-level cricket, and how anyone can apply them to their own game, either in club or schoolboy cricket. He divulges what life is like for an international cricketer, and how he copes with the pressures of life on tour. Illustrated throughout with key moments in his career and specially commissioned new photographs, this book also provides great stories of sporting heroes, setbacks and successes. Stuart Broad's world in cricket is laid bare.

End of an Era: Strauss Announces Retirement from Professional Cricket

It's fair to say that today is a sad day for English cricket; but it is also a day we can look back at someone’s career and appreciate all that he has done for England as a player and as a fantastic captain.

Andrew Strauss announced his retirement from professional cricket. He's been one of our favourite captains thus far and we doubt that's going to change anytime soon. As sad as we are to see ‘Straussey’ retire, we believe he’s made the right choice for the England team. He stated in the press conference earlier today that his decision to retire from cricket was purely based on the fact that he has not been scoring runs like he should have and that he believes he’s ‘run his race.’ It is nice to see cricketers out there who call it quits with their dignity and integrity intact. Shows that they do not go after money and fame like some of them do.

Strauss has done so much over the years since his test debut in 2004. He scored a century on debut, has gotten 7000+ test runs, has gone on to win 100 Test caps, captained the side in 50 of those matches, scored 21 Test centuries & six ODI hundreds, has been part of three Ashes wins in which he's captained two and has helped England get to No.1 in Test cricket! The list goes on! Since the appointment of his captaincy and Andy Flower coming in as England coach we've had the opportunity to see the team grow and overcome so many obstacles and boundaries to reach goals. He has stressed over and over the importance of trust and respect within a team. We believe the two Andys were the backbone behind building that trust and respect within the strong England side we see today; and for that we believe we should thank and applaud them.

Integrity, humility, dedication, magnanimity, assertiveness, fairness, calmness and selflessness are a few of the many qualities Strauss had! He epitomises a great leader. He’s been a selfless cricketer, shying away from the limelight whenever possible, when it came to personal milestones. That is rare in the world of cricket nowadays with so many players caring more about their personal fame, fortune and reputation, rather than the team’s overall image.

We believe he’s been one of England’s BEST captains so far! We will miss the talented, calm, cool, smiley, level-headed and lovely character whenever we watch England come out to bat or field. He’s an England legend in our eyes.

Before concluding, we’ve picked our top 5 moments in Straussey’s career...

TOP 5 ANDREW STRAUSS MOMENTS

1. Test debut and maiden century at Lord’s his home ground...

2. One of the defining moments of the 2005 Ashes series - catching Adam Gilchrist off of Andrew Flintoff at Trent Bridge...

3. Captained the England side in England's first Ashes win down under since 1987...

4. Took England to the top of world Test rankings by defeating India...

5. 100th Test appearance and 50 as captain at Lord’s...

We want to wish the very best of luck to you, Straussey. We are proud of your achievements and we want to thank you for all the great memories. It has been an absolute pleasure to watch you play, captain and lead the England team to glory. Thank you!

As one era comes to a close another begins. All the best to Alastair Cook, the newly appointed England Test captain. May this be a long and successful career as England's Test captain!

Will never forget the day Strauss demolished his sunglasses - not on purpose obviously! Enjoy the clip below ;)

Meeting the blonde beanpole, Stuart Broad

You know how you have everything planned for when you meet your favourite cricketer, actor, musician etc and everything tend to crumble at that critical moment when you do meet them? Yep, that happened to me, yesterday at the Oval (Day 1 of the 1st Test match against the South Africans).

For those who do not know me that well, I have been a fan of  Stuart Broad  for over 5 years now. I have always wanted to meet him but never had the opportunity because I live in Canada. It may sound stupid, weird, crazy or even a bit melodramatic to some of you cricket lovers, but when you’ve supported someone over the years simply because he/she is a talented cricketer, a down-to-earth character who has an unbelievable passion for the game and who is not money driven like most people these day, it is just natural to want to meet that said person. Not only for the sake of being able to tell everyone you've met him/her but also to thank him/her for being the person that he/she is. At least I’d like to think so. Stuart Broad in my opinion is a rare gem in the world of cricket.

Despite being alone (because my friend/fellow Broadette Jayna had to leave early) and not knowing how I’d be able to get a hold of the Stuart, I stood near the pavilion of  The Oval  after the match with a few cricket fans waiting to catch a glimpse of the England and South African players. I had only one thing in mind. Meet Stuart, get his book signed, somehow manage to take a photo and leave! :)

Most players (not going to mention names as I'm sure they just wanted to get back to the hotel soon) just walked past the awaiting fans. Stuart and Matt Prior came along and everyone started yelling out Stuart's name. Kinda felt bad for Matty P cause he's an awesome person as well, but no one bothered talking to him.  As soon as I spotted Stuart, I just extended my book to him and was talking to him while he signed the book. It was weird and a bit funny now reliving the moment. I remember being a nervous-wreck. Forgot to mention who I was (he knows me by name) but somehow managed to get the following words out: 'Stuart, would you mind posing for a photo really quick?' He looked at me and said ' Yeah of course!' He proved something right there. He said he never turned down a photo request by a fan. The fact that he did not know me right then, but still agreed to pose for a photo speaks volumes about the guy he is. One of the fans who were standing outside with me wanting to shake hands with the players, volunteered to take a photo of me and Stuart :) Whoever you are, THANK YOU! :)

I thanked Stuart and the guy who took the photo really quick (don't think they heard me though) and ran like the wind. Forgot which way the tube station was due to all the excitement! Best day of my life - to date! Will never forget that moment! Right after, I tweeted Stuart and thanked him for the photo and autograph. He messaged me back saying 'just seen this. glad it happened'. Little moments like these make fans like me very happy. Truly was the best day ever.

To those who haven't met Stuart yet, when you do meet him, stay calm. He's the most sweetest/friendliest person ever. He won't run off if he knows you want a picture and an autograph :)

Let me finish off this blog post by sharing my photo with you :)

Me (wearing the Broad #8 shirt) with the fantastic man himself, Stuart Broad

Happiest girl on the planet! :) Next time when I do meet him - and there will be a next time - I'm gonna stay calm and not panic ;) Will definitely have a proper conversation then! :)

Tom Maynard

Just heard the news about Tom Maynard. So awful. Our thoughts go out to his friends and family.

Wednesday 13 June 2012

A note from a young fan :)

Hey! My name is Aaliya Syed and I live in Pakistan. I am 14 years old. I have been a cricket fan since I was 9. Cricket is my obsession (even more since broady is playing). The cricketing world is an amazing platform to unite fans all over the world together and gives everyone a chance to express their feelings.

I am a huge fan of Stuart Broad as he is one of the cutest and most dashing players of all time. He has the ideal personality and his passion for cricket affects me too. I saw him in an England vs Pakistan match which was his first ever international match. When I saw him I actually thought that he is made for the England Crickcet Team. To me, he he is the reason the England team shines during matches. He is the heartbeat of this Broadette. I can see his strength whenever he playes a match.

Lastly, I would like to wish him the best of luck with his cricketing career. I would love to meet him one day.

5 of 5 Stars to Bowled Over by Stuart Broad

An Ashes Celebration: My Side of the Story

Stuart Broad's magnificent spell of five for thirty-seven in the final and decisive Test against Australia at the Oval won him the man of the match award and proved a major contribution to England regaining the 2009 Ashes. Stuart ended up as England's leading wicket taker in a series which had also shown him to be a highly accomplished batsman. Stuart is the son of Chris Broad, himself a former England opening batsman in an Ashes winning series, and Stuart has clearly inherited his father's natural ability. In BOWLED OVER - AN ASHES CELEBRATION he refers to a promising cricket career at school, his development as a player at county level with Leicester and Nottingham and to his early games for England. But first and foremost this lavishly illustrated book is devoted to the ultimate and thrilling success of the England team that beat the Australian side. Stuart describes the highs and lows of this, his first Ashes campaign, which ended so triumphantly. His achievements allied to his competitive character and youthful good looks have already made him a hugely popular figure with the cricket public.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, there was no cricket again today so I flipped through Stuart Broad's book again. I read it straight through when I first picked up a copy and I was blown away by all the life events that made Broady who he was as a cricketer up until 2009.

I was actually still quite new to the sport in 2009 (I'm originally from the USA) and this was the first ever book I'd read on the subject. Since reading Broad's book though, I've enjoyed many more. Especially Marcus Trescothick's autobiography: Coming Back to me. What a brave, honest and talented man.

I am really looking forward to Stuart Broad's next book. I understand it's due out in October this year. He's done so much since 2009 and I know there will be loads more growth in the elite sportsman himself and in his cricketing. So excited! I'm quite bookish, if you haven't noticed by now.

Jay has done a review of this book too, and Elizabeth will be providing one for this blog soon.

In keeping with the theme of books, here's a classic lolcats...

Thursday 7 June 2012

Aha!

When I went to see my first ever international game of cricket at Edgbaston in 2009 it was monumentally abandoned due to torrential rain. I was sorely depressed by this. It would have been the first time I'd get to see you know who play live. No, not Voldemort, Stuart Broad.

Now look! Play has been abandoned once again when I was going to drive up to Birmingham for some cricket watching this week. Hence, the AHA! of the blog post title.

Bad luck is what I've got when it comes to open air stadium attending of international cricket for me. Maybe it's the fact that I'm American and I'm like supposed to stick to watching baseball by law.

Whatever.

How It All Began: The Broadettes Journey

Let's face it, The Broadettes have become an entity. A gathering of enthusiasts brought together by the love of cricket and one fantastically talented man...

HAHA! Just kidding. I'm talking about this guy of course:

So, how did it all begin? The Stuey love? The combining of womanly forces in their appreciation for all things crickettey? Read on to find out as Jay Geeganage and I take a walk through the past 5 years of Broadette-dom in Q&A form...

Suz asks Jay: Remember the myspace days? Is the myspace Broad page still around?

Jay replies to Suz: haha of course I do. The good times! That's where we initially got in contact too eh? Yes, the myspace Broad page is still up and running, although I hardly update it anymore. It's all about facebook and twitter these days.

Suz says: Brilliant news that the myspace site is still active! Can you give us a link please? For anyone who wants to pay a visit to see where the Broady love all began for the Broadettes. Or, if you were a Broadette way back then you can stop by for a bit of nostalgia! Those were the days eh, Jay? So glad I met you way back then through the hotness of one great cricketing chap.

Okay, next question. Do you remember that ATA Q&A with Stuart Broad where I burned my pizza just so I didn't miss a question?! Did Stuey answer any of your questions, if you recall? That was well fun, from what I remember.

Jay says: Here's the link to the Broadettes Myspace if anyone wants to pay a visit: http://www.myspace.com/stuartbroadofficialfans

Oh yes.. I do remember the ATA Q&A with Broady and you burning the pizza because of the excitement! Had to get up at 4:30am just so I didn't miss the live Q&A session! Haha! And yes he did answer one of my questions - which was about something Micheal Vaughan had said about him. Don't remember the question though, sorry. It was how I initially got in contact with Broady; something I won't forget. The Broadettes who joined the Q&A that day are good friends now, which is brilliant!

Suz: Thanks for the link! I didn't know you got up at 4:30 in the morning! Now that's dedication. What fond memories. Anyway, my next question progresses from way back then. When did you start up the Stuart Broad facebook group? And how many admins were a part of this endeavour?

Jay: We started the Stuart Broad Facebook group back in 2008. We had four admins: Clare, Hamshany, Ameera and I, who are still a part of The Broadettes. We got to know each other through other FB Broad groups people had running at that time and realizing we shared the same interests and wanted to promote Stuart, we started the group. We vowed to keep the group going, updating members on the latest news regarding Broad and the England team. So far we have succeeded and we have gained so many members over the years. The support has been amazing!

Suz: How lovely. I know Stuart has an official facebook of his own for fans now. Does the Broadettes facebook still get new followers though? I presume there must be as everyone loves the Broadettes!

So, on from facebook came twitter next! I remember you asking me what the name of the new twitter account should be. I think it was a toss up between BroadyFans08 and Broadettes08 and you went with TheBroadettes8, which totally rocks! What was it like when you realised TheBroadettes8 twitter was being followed by the big guy himself?!

Jay: Amazing! It was the best feeling ever when Stuart followed us! Knowing that the big guy himself was following made us realize we're supporting the right guy. He loves interacting with his fans which shows that he keeps his feet firmly on the ground and is very much normal despite the fame and recognition that comes with being one of the best bowlers in the world at the moment. So it was brilliant knowing that he's making an effort to keep in touch with his fans.

And yeah we still get new followers. Probably because people can express their love for Stuart and how much they appreciate him on there knowing many fans out there would agree with them. It's also one of the best places to get in touch with Broad fans all over the world. Even though Stuart's got an official fan page himself, fans can only comment on pictures and links they put up. In our group, fans can leave wall posts. So posts regarding Broady's appearances on tv shows etc can also be shown.

Suz: So true what you said about The Broadettes facebook group. Fans can connect better on there than they can on his official page. Not saying him having an official page on FB is bad, or anything! lol. It's fab! It's great that he interacts with his fans online a bit.

Talking of which, HOW BLOODY INSANELY PLEASED WERE YOU WHEN YOU SAW THAT STUART WAS FOLLOWING YOUR OWN PERSONAL TWITTER ACCOUNT?!

Jay: I was so much in shock, I couldn't believe my eyes. I kept staring at it for like 5 mins straight, refreshed the page over and over thinking it'll disappear every time I did so but it didn't, haha. He's been amazing over the years. Really sweet to us. So when he started following me, I wasn't surprised of how nice he's being. It was extra special because he started following me without me asking him to do so. I was and still am very happy.

Suz: You deserve it, Jay! You've been his number 1 supporter for years. A long time without actually seeing him in person, so what was it like when you actually did see him play live, was it last Sunday?

Jay: Thank you. That's nice of you to say so. Yeah, I got to see him on May 20th after 5 long years! It was brilliant! I just couldn't believe it. And the fact that he performed so well on that day was the icing on the cake for me. He's a talented lad. A legend in the making in my opinion. Getting to witness the historic moment when he completed the Lord's Test Treble and became the first cricketer to do so after Sir Ian Botham, was amazing! He's going to break many more records in the future. I am certain of it!

Suz: Your confidence in his talent is catching! That's what I love about the Broadettes, it's the spirit of the game, the thrill of supporting the players!

Now that we have The Broadettes blog it's a new venture into supporting this legend in the making. It's so great how all the Broadettes and Stuart Broad fans have come together around the world for their love of the dude himself and cricket!

Thanks so much for participating in this interview with me, Jay. It's been fun reliving The Broadettes progression over the years. And hopefully there will be more to come! You'll be attending Broad's charity game in a few months time, right?

Jay: Yes, I am attending the 6-a-side charity cricket tournament this year held by The Broad Appeal. Liz and Robyn (two of the Broadettes) are also attending. We think it is brilliant that Stuart and his family have put so much effort into raising awareness of MND and raising funds to find a cure for this horrible disease. If anyone would like to know more about The Broad Appeal they can visit the following site: http://www.thebroadappeal.org/

We have to support our boys through thick and thin. We've got to have faith in them. We have an incredible amount of faith in Stuart and so far he has not let us down, and nor will he in the future.

The response to The Broadettes blog has been incredible and it's all thanks to you, Suz! Thank you for starting it up and helping us manage it.

Thank you for asking me to do this Q&A for your blog, Suz. It's been fun reliving all those fond memories over the last 5 years. Cheers! x

Suz: Thank YOU for answering all my questions, Jay! And thank you Broadettes and Broad fans around the world for contributing your support of cricket and Stuart Broad on all the Broadettes social sites!

Lastly, what would a blog post be without a lolcats?

Now THAT is an appeal ;)

Broad Completes Lord's Test Treble & Makes History

by Jay Geeganage

It was not a particularly sunny day at Lord's yesterday as we sat there in the freezing cold, bundled up ready to be entertained by the magnificent England cricket team who are currently No.1 in test match cricket.

Proceedings started off slow during the morning session, but fireworks started to go off right after lunch as Broad bagged 3 more wickets to add up to his already existing eight wicket match haul.

He became the 4th cricketer in the history of cricket to have made a century, obtain a fiver-fer and then complete a 10-wicket match haul at Lord's; Stuart also became the first Englishman after Sir Ian Botham to have done this - to have made it on to all three honours boards at Lord's!

I am so happy that I got to witness this historic moment at Lord's, the home of cricket! What an achievement!

I am so proud of him and I bet you, all the Broad fans out there, are as well! He is, like I always say, a legend in the making! x

Broad’s Seven Wicket Extravaganza

by Jay Geeganage

http://goo.gl/rHjLB
Stuart’s international career has been like a rollercoaster ride huh!? You know how you go up forever and then come down in an instant to go back up again in the next few seconds; that’s what his career has been like. Luckily the ride has mostly been up than down which is what every cricketer or any sportsman can ever dream of.

What a year it’s been for him!! This time last year against Sri Lanka, Stuart was struggling to get wickets by bowling short and was known to be taking the role of the enforcer. Now look at him!

He did not start off Day 1 of the first Test against the West Indies as impressively as one would hope for but as the day progressed, he was hitting the right lengths and creating opportunities; opportunities that were appealing to the batsmen who couldn’t help but nick the ball to the slip fielders :). Before long, he had taken 4 wickets. Didn’t stop him there though as he went to bag a couple more by the end of day’s play.

Broad’s six wicket haul at Lord’s made him the fifth Englishman to feature on the Lord’s honours board for both batting and bowling accomplishments. For those who are wondering when he got a ton – In 2010 (Aug), Stuart made a century (169) against Pakistan to go on the honours board at Lord’s for the first time in his career, surpassing his father Chris Broad’s score of a 162.

As six wickets were not enough *wink*, Stuart went on to bag the wicket of Shannon Gabriel, first ball of Day 2, taking his career best bowling figures up to 7-72 and he’s currently on a hat-trick. Doesn’t stop there, mind you! Whilst all this was happening, he also reached his 150 Test Wicket milestone :)

http://goo.gl/90HjG
What a fantastic day full of excitement for this young lad! Stuart was magnificent on the field. Proud is merely another word that exists to describe my emotions. It has been fantastic to see him grow as a cricketer over the last few years, and long may that continue! He’s proving that pundits and critics who don’t believe in him are wrong. Way to go Broady!

Before signing off, I have to say, we are so proud to call ourselves fans of a cricketer who does his job because he loves it, who strives for improvements regardless of how good he is and who still sticks to his roots and has his feet firmly on the ground despite all the recognition and fame that comes with being the fantastic cricketer he is.

Well done, Broady! x

5 of 5 Stars to Stuart Broad Bowled Over - Review by Jay

From amazon.co.uk

Product Description

'Stuart Broad's magnificent spell of five for thirty-seven in the final and decisive Test against Australia at the Oval won him the man of the match award and proved a major contribution to England regaining the 2009 Ashes.

About the Author

Stuart Broad was born in 1986. He is the son of former England opening batsman Chris Broad. Stuart was educated at Oakham School before starting his professional cricket career for Leicestershire and then moving to Nottinghamshire. A right-arm seam bowler and a left-handed batsman, Stuart Broad made his England debut in 2007. Broad proved to be an invaluable member of the victorious England 2009 Ashes squad, and he won the Man of the Match award in the decisive fifth Test at the Oval.

-------------------------------------------------

Stuart Broad and Paul Newman have done such an incredible job describing pivotal moments of the 2009 Ashes series. Once you start reading the book, you get lost in the vivid descriptions of those moments. It is very well written. You can just visualize every ball being delivered, the way it spins (in slow motion I should add – yes a little dramatic there), every run being scored, wickets falling OR tail-enders holding on tight to save the team from a defeat against their rivals! IT’S ALL THERE!

My personal favourites were the behind-the-scenes moments described. They are in such great detail adding more drama and tension to the moments. It seems like you are there, literally, like a fly on the wall. These are the moments we as spectators of the game don’t get to experience. We don’t get to see the stress the team and staff experience, or the things they’d do to get their mind off the pressure building up in critical moments. For example, the last few minutes in the Cardiff Test match. The Panesar-Anderson partnership towards the end froze me to my seat, my butt was numb at the end. Not a pretty picture. Apologies.

Anyways, you can relive it all! It’s an awesome read! Well described as I mentioned earlier and a book worth having in your library You also get to know a little bit of how the mind of Stuart Broad works. Need I say more? Are you a cricket fan? Read it. You’ll enjoy it!

Introducing the Broadettes South Africa correspondent, Broadette...

Ameera

HI! I'm Ameera Conrad; actress, singer, writer, Broadette. There're other things that I do which are slightly less significant, but also a big part of me.

Something that is significant is that I am the SA representative for the Broadettes - so whenever England is down in Cape Town (my hometown) I'm at Newlands spreading some Broady love! The last time they were here, in fact, I got to work in the England WAGs' suite as a hostess, which is why I support the WAGs as much as the players.

My first experience with the English cricket team was way back in 2004, when they toured South Africa. I went to the Johannesburg test (which I think England may have lost?) and lucky me (at the time this would be sarcastic) my ticket was somehow in the middle of the Barmy Army's block. I was surprised, to say the least, and a bit scared. Honestly, I'd been a victim to the anti-England propaganda, and had half expected to be murdered (which, I guess, some of the people who had trekked from England for the tour could also say). Anyway, I found myself sitting behind a gentleman with no other name but 'Cat' written on the back of his England ODI shirt, and he introduced me to the wonders of the English team. Freddie Flintoff, Michael Vaughn, Ashley Giles - all names that I'd come into contact with, having grown up in a family of cricketers - were shown to me through the eyes of an avid supporter. I was hooked. At the end of the test, I thanked Cat for educating me and he gave me his England flag, with cigarette burns in its corner, so that I "would never forget my love for English cricket" and, clearly, I never did.

Since then, I've had the same English flag and it's been to every England game - including the T20 World Cup, where my two best friends and I left school early to see them play (in our horrible, brown school uniforms). I will always support English cricket, and we can all thank Cat for that.

American Cricket

Wow! I didn't know there was an American Cricket Association. And I'm American! HAHA. Living in England now though. Enjoying the sport and of course supporting Stuart Broad.

Finding out about American cricket is pretty cool. I'll have to check out the local team the next time I visit friends and family in Utah! Apparently Salt Lake has a cricket club. I'm intrigued to see if they play by the same rules, because I know soccer in America is a little different from football in the rest of the world.

The first difference I noticed about football in England was that players don't wait to tag each other when going off field to be replaced. During my last trip to America we attended a soccer game. It was years ago and David Beckham was on the visiting team. The crowd environment was so different. Firstly, there was hardly anyone there! Soccer isn't very big in the USA. But the fans who were there were so vibrant. What spirit! I prefer watching soccer in America than here in England, to be honest. There's cheers, rather than chants over there, and there aren't any football hooligans.

Anyway, this is a blog about cricket, so what am I doing banging on about football? Sorry, I guess I just love all sports too much. Especially American football and basketball! Teehee.

So yeah, the Provo cricket plays in Rock Canyon. I used to picnic and hike there all the time. Amazing landscape. Well, that settles it. I'll definitely be checking out some Provo and Salt Lake cricket next time I'm in the good 'ol US of A! :)

[Editorial update 11:15]

OMG I just found the Layton City Bashers website! HAHA! I love it! I graduated from Layton High ;)

Another New Broadette Guest Blogger!

Rabiya

Hey, my name is Rabiya Merchant. I am 14 living in Pakistan. I am also a cricket fanatic. It is an undeniable game that youngsters are crazy for. They are very passionate about it . In past people did not follow cricket like today, but the world has become a global village so changes are taking place dramatically, therefore the number of cricket fans are increasing day by day.

Cricket is my passion. I feel it unites nations and people together, this creates understanding among nations of the world, it becomes a different place for cricket fans. Cricket is an exciting sport and it is said that cricket is a gentleman's game. Not only boys all over the world, girls too are huge fans of cricket. And I'm a huge fan of Stuart Broad!

I remember on 28th August, the first time I saw him play against Pakistan in a T20 match (it was also his debut match). When I saw him I felt that one day he would be the best cricketer on Earth because of his bowling, batting, feilding. Not to mention his dashing good looks, adorable eyes and tall height. He is in the hearts of the people around the globe. He has already won the love of millions and will likely gain more fans over time. Broad is truly a cricket champion, because he plays with his heart and soul.

I joined this blog to fully support cricket, Stuart Broad, The Broadettes and other cricket fans out there. And finally, I hope to meet Stuart someday because he was born to play cricket!

Swapna

Hello buddies. This is Swapna from Mumbai, India.

I am 19 years old and a student of Commerce. I have cricket in my blood, being an Indian, but i also love cricket because I love Stuey! I'm a huge crazy Broady fan.. I watch all his matches and even though I have exams I make it a point to at least watch him bowl.

I first saw Stuart during an Eng vs Pak match, which was his debut. But get this, before I even noticed him my mom was watching and asked, "who is this cute boy?"

He gained most of my attention during the 2009 T20 world cup. It was a heart breaking moment to see those six sixes (even though I was supporting India).

Anyway, Stuart has come a long way with his success. He surely has a spark, an urge to win in him that makes him distinct from other bowlers all around the world. I am so so proud to be Broady's fan and I'm sure all of you are too! He needs no introduction and his achievements are so amazing.

I've never had a chance to meet Stuey, so I feel unlucky in this case. Whenever he's been in India he has suffered injury. One day hopefully I'll fulfil my dreams and meet him. My friends think I will faint if and when I do see him in person. lolz. But no matter, I'll continue to contribute in everything related to Stuart Broad.

Broadette Sarah!

Sarah

I'm Sarah Richardson, 28, from Redditch in Worcestershire. I am married and have 2 children, Freddie who is 5, and Jenson who is 4 months. I became an official Broadette once they joined twitter. It's such a great group of girls who love all things cricket and we can really get absorbed in talking about it.

My love for cricket started about 7 years ago and completely swept me off my feet. Not really being a massive sports fan at the time, except for football, I discovered my passion for it was greater than even that.

I support Warwickshire bears, also Nottingham Forest (obviously) but will watch any cricket that is on no matter who is playing from England in a test match to the IPL.

When Stuart Broad came to my attention first off I thought wow what a man (sorry but I did) his passion for the sport was infectious and he really wanted to play cricket for the love of the game not for money or the fame which is fair to say for most cricketers to be honest they really would rather not have the fame that comes with the game.

I've had the privlidge of meeting Stuart on 2 seperate occasions, both at Edgbasgon cricket ground where I got photos taken with him. He was very tall. That's the first thing I thought as my husband is tall at about 6"3' but Stuart is taller.

About 2 years ago BBC radio Nottingham asked if one of us could talk to them about us as a group. What we liked about Stuart and such. So I spoke to them explaining we thought his determination was a positive influence on people and really made us think about what we wanted to acheive. It was so nice to be able to tell people that women can enjoy cricket and not just be looking at men, we can appreciate the game for what it is.

I want to thank everyone who makes The Broadettes what we are, be it on Facebook or Twitter, we really love and cherish your support.

The Newest Broadette

Robyn

Hey there everyone! I’m Robyn, I’m 23 and live in Devon but originally from Warwickshire, lived in Spain throughout my teenage years!

I became part of The Broadettes officially a few months ago, although I have always adored Stuart. I remember the first time I saw him play on TV, it was back in 2008 during the test series against South Africa (I think! Sometimes I struggle to remember that far back, even though it wasn’t that long ago!). But it was during The Ashes series in 2009 when he shone through the most for me. I could tell from then on he would go far from his sheer force and determination, and indeed he has :)

I first became interested in cricket back in 2005 during the Ashes test series, I won’t lie though, I’m even more obsessive over it now! I just think it is such an exciting sport, and the people that don’t share the same passion just don’t understand how much hard work goes in to it, and training etc, trying to be the best you can be in whatever you do. This is why I admire Stuart so much, he does everything to the best of his abilities and doesn’t like to let anyone down. As well as this, he is such a thoughtful, talented young man and will continue to be.

Another great thing that he is part of is his family’s charity The Broad Appeal, helping to raise funds and hopefully in the near future find a cure for Motor Neurone Disease. He should be proud of himself for being part of such an amazing cause, and I will forever respect him for this.

I could talk about him all day, but I think you’ll all agree with me when I say this, because I know all The Broadettes do, he is a very very attractive man, which is just an added bonus to every other brilliant trait he has! He is without a doubt my favourite cricketer ever, he has done England proud, and I will continue to support him for the foreseeable future. And also, thank you to everyone who supports us!!

Love,
Robyn x

Introducing Broadette Megs!

Megs

Hey there! I'm Meghana and I'm from India.

Since this is cricket and Stuart Broad related, I'll keep to it and start off by saying I'm a huge cricket fan, the Australian team being my favourite I'm afraid! I think test cricket is the best form of the game hands down. I'm a tiny supporter in stature, but a big fan at heart.

I've always followed T20 cricket and that's when I first saw Stuart Broad play in a match between England and India. I remember that it was 19/09/07 when he was unfortunately hit for 6 sixes in an over. The tables have turned now and he has become and amazing all-rounder! :)

Since then it's been the same craze. He's grown since he first started playing cricket. He's now such a brilliant cricketer! He became a hero in England for winning the Ashes, which kind of sucked for this Ausssie supporter, to be honest!

Now he has a new role as England's T20 captain! He has to be one of my favourite cricketers, without a doubt. I love how he appreciates us Broadettes and our support for him.

Unfortunately I've been awfully unlucky when it comes to my chances of meeting him due to injury. When I was positive about meeting him during the IPL last year, he had an injury that didn't even allow him to play. That was the 2nd time I missed him. Then when England had a series against India in October 2011 the England team were scheduled to stay in my city for an entire week! But again he was injured! Typical of my luck, right?

At least I've met a great bunch of amazing girls through our passion for the game and our love of Stuart Broad. It's nice to share in our support of cricket.

To finish, I really hope to meet Stuart some day! *fingers crossed*

Broadette Liz!

Today on the blog we're highlighting Broadette...

Liz

Hi! Elizabeth here! (Liz)

I'm from England, and I love cricket! It's such a fantastic sport, and I think it's great that it's such a gentleman's game, where respect is an important part of every game. I believe that in today's world, in a lot of other sports, respect for other players and teams is something that sometimes gets forgotton, but, for the most part, cricket is something that upholds this. Most cricket players are great role models in today's society,as not only are they talented sportsmen, they are also genuinely lovely people, which I know from having been lucky enough to meet most of the England team personally.

I first got properly interested in cricket in the early summer of 2008, during the England vs South Africa test series. I first started watching it as a friend introduced it to me, and I immediately began to love the game (and the England team!) It was during this test series that Stuart Broad caught my eye. Of course, he is very attractive, but not only that, he is a very talented cricketer with a great future ahead of him. I've always been a huge fan of his-he is, without a doubt, my favourite cricketer in the world. He has proved throughout his career that he has talent with both bat and ball, and whenever he's had a tough patch on the playing field he has proved that he will bounce back and do us and his team proud. I have never lost faith in him.

I am lucky enough to say that I have had the priviledge of meeting Stuart several times so far, and he is a genuinely lovely, gentlemanly person. I think it's great that there are so many fellow fans of his out there, which is why we have created all these fan pages for him-he deserves all of the support, and it is important that we continue to follow and support Stuart and the England team throughout the ups and downs of playing cricket, while at the same time making new friends through the fan pages and sharing in our love of the sport :)

Welcome!

Welcome to The Broadettes Blog! We are eleven fans of cricket supporting our favourite player of all, the amazing Stuart Broad! This blog is for all things Stuart and cricket, but also to highlight the lives of each of the Broadettes in their quest to unite Stuart Broad fans around the world. The first posts will introduce each of the Broadettes and you can check for updates on the above pages any time. First and foremost the founder of the Broadettes herself...

Jay Geeganage!
----------------------------------------------------

Hello, hello! Name’s Jay. I'm Sri Lankan-Canadian. I love cricket. I mean, it's in my blood to love this incredible sport. I grew up eating, living and breathing cricket. I’ve been a fan since I was about 4 and will always be a fan. The reason I love cricket is because it's known as a gentlemen’s game. Foul play leads to undesirable consequences which I know applies to other sports that one can over-look. Certainly not in cricket though.

Men might say girls are into cricket simply because we ladies get the chance to drool over men in cricket whites etc, but I say different. For those of us who started watching cricket from a younger age, it is strictly because we love the game. Eye-candy is just an added bonus ;) I’m sure most of you would agree :)

I’ve got one name for you - Stuart Broad; not only is this lad gorgeous, intelligent, hard-working, inspiring, dedicated, kind-hearted, and genuine, he also happens to be one of the spearheads for the England cricket team. Yes I am a massive fan of Stuart Broad, have been since 2007.

I'll admit it was his good-looks that grabbed my attention when England were playing against India. Since then the love, respect and admiration for the guy has grown. Why? Because Stuart is brutally honest. He’s not afraid to speak his mind, which admittedly sometimes back-fires on him, but that can happen to anyone. It’s a part of being human. I’d rather someone spoke their mind than repeat something they’ve been coached to say through gritted teeth and a fake smile. He may look serious when he’s on the pitch but he’s also got a funny side to him when he’s off it.

Stuart’s grown a great deal as a cricketer since I first saw him. Everyone remembers the incident from the 2007 T20I World Cup. Since then he’s become England’s go-to bowler in difficult times where he’s shone through like the star he is. Not forgetting he’s been pretty handy with the bat as well. And how many times has he single-handedly won matches for England? Too many to count! :)

We’ve created all these fan-pages for Stuart because he deserves more exposure as a cricketer. People may say we are completely crazy. Well, if supporting a legend in the making is crazy, then you can call us crazy any time. (;
